Job description:Coordinated by Monona Terrace, Terrace Town is a program that introduces community planning to elementary-age children. The program consists of several phases:
Teachers attend a workshop to learn how to use buildings, streetscapes and neighborhoods as resources in their classroom.

As a mentor, you will assist one classroom with their design project throughout the fall semester. You will bring a professional, "real life" perspective to discussions about how communities are planned, what makes a quality community, and how people can participate in the improvement of the built environment. You will also aid the students in building their own city with cardboard boxes.
The program culminates when twenty classes will construct their Box Cities at Monona Terrace. The public is invited to tour Terrace Town, participate in hands-on activities related to architecture and community design, and attend the grand ribbon-cutting.
As mentor, your job may entail:
acquiring resources, including city maps, zoning charts, photographs of buildings
speaking to the students about design or planning issues
inviting colleagues to speak
helping students during the "construction phase"- drawing the city plan, making and placing the box buildings
assisting with moving the city to the display site at Monona Terrace and participating in the day's activities
Time Commitment: You are asked to participate in the following:
a meeting with your partner teacher to discuss your involvement in the project
the construction of Box City at Terrace Town
4 visits to the classroom
This will likely equal about 15-20 hours, plus any preparation time.
