Classroom Learning : Standards

"The interdisciplinary nature of the materials allow you to pursue math problems one day and civic
activism the next. The Terrace Town project provided the 'vehicle' I was looking for to ensure an
entire semester of multidisciplinary study."

Box City is an interdisciplinary curriculum that meets standards in several subjects. The sample below
was provided by teachers who participated in Terrace Town 2002.

Standards (Wisconsin Academic Standards in Fourth Grade)

Visual Arts-

Know basic information, such as the history, public art, and unique architecture, of their own cultural community.

Know that the environment influences the look and use of art, architecture, and design.

Communicate basic ideas by producing design art forms.


Social Studies-

Use reference points, latitude and longitude, direction, size, shape, and scale to locate positions on representations of the earth's surface.

Identify major changes in the local communities that have been caused by human beings, and explain their probable effects on the community and the environment.

Identify and examine various sources of information that are used for constructing and understanding the past.


Identify the economic roles of various institutions, including households, businesses, and government.

Give examples of group and institutional influences such as laws, rules, and peer pressure on people, events, and culture.


Math-

Use Reasoning Abilities to perceive patterns, identify relationships, etc.

Communicate mathematical ideas in a variety of ways, including words, numbers, symbols, pictures, charts, graphs, tables, diagrams, and models.

Connect mathematical learning with other subjects, personal experiences, current events, and personal interests.

Recognize and describe measurable attributes and the appropriate units to measure them.

Work with data in the context of real-world situations.
