Classroom Learning : Activities

Social Sciences- Use a simplified map and wooden blocks for "buildings" to practice planning a community on a smaller scale. The initial discussions surrounding what buildings should be included and where they should be placed serve as a starting point for further exploration.

Social Sciences- Design a map of the community in which you live with points of interest important to students, including places of historical, environmental, and personal significance.

Social Sciences- Decide by consensus the values of your Box City and the rights of every citizen who lives there. This "bill of rights" serves as the criteria for deciding what buildings to include in the community.

Social Sciences- Students assume the role of a citizen and vocalize that person's interests in a discussion about the city plan.

Math- Using a scale measurement such as 1/8", calculate the height of model and actual buildings. Map scale can also be used to figure distances between buildings and locations.

Arts; Science- Use movement to act out structural principles such as compression and arches.

Arts; Science- Use household objects like newspaper, toothpicks, and pipe cleaners to construct small or life-size structures. Explore structural engineering principles using the creations.

Arts- Have students draw their own dwellings as practice for looking at buildings.

Science- Conduct an inspection of the school building for its safety to users, and its impact on the natural environment.
